With the recent decision on “Marriage Equality” delivered by the Supreme Court, many Christians have seemingly thrown in the towel – lost their joy and think the world is coming to an end. Well, fret not. God is still on the throne and He has a plan that will come to pass no matter what any judge says.

Many are wondering what happened. How did we get into this position where something that the Bible is so clear on – something that is clearing called sin – has been legalized. Well, let me ask you this – how did we get into the position where something that God clearly calls sin was legalized back in 1973? Yes, back in 1973 the Supreme Court legalized the murder of unborn babies calling it the more friendly name – abortion. How did we get to that point?

Well, in both instances, we got there the same way. Let’s look at the scriptures.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” – 1 Timothy 2:1-4

In this scripture, the Lord is telling us that we have the authority and the responsibility to pray for our nation and our leaders because we are the ones who can change the direction of our nation. If we fail to do so, then it is our fault that the nation is going in the wrong direction. It is our fault that ungodly laws are being passed – not the courts, not the lawmakers. Even though, naturally speaking, the lawmakers are making the laws – spiritually speaking – we are the ones controlling this nation (or not due to our inaction to pray).

A little history on the Supreme Court (SC). The Constitution of the United States of America Article III, section I states, “The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour…” Today is is believed that Supreme Court Justices are judges until they decide to step down or until they die. That’s not what the constitution says. In fact, back before we let the SC take over as governing body, justice John Pickering (appointed by George Washington himself) was removed from the bench because of public intoxication and public disrespect for God. Another myth is that there are three co-equal branches of the government – not true. The SC was not originally established as a law-making, co-equal branch of our government. In fact, many times throughout history was their ruling ignored. In fact, while many believe that the SC makes laws, this couldn’t be further from the truth. They are there to interpret the law in light of the Constitution – not their own bias. After all, every one of their ruling is given as “It is the opinion of the court.”

So, you see that the Supreme Court we have today is not the Supreme Court the founders of this nation intended. That does not change where we are. That does not change what God has commanded us to do. I encourage you to take your authority in prayer, take your responsibility in prayer and pray for our leaders – including the ones in the Supreme Court.

We must remember that there is a spiritual realm, that demons do exist, and they do manipulate and control people and organizations. But we must also remember, that Jesus gave us authority over demon spirits in His name. Use your authority and bind the evil spirits operating in the political realm of the United States. Pray for God’s will to take place in this nation. The Bible says that the Lord holds the hearts of kings in His hand and that it is He that sets kings in their places and removes kings from their places. Pray and ask God to remove leaders who are working contrary to His will and plan and replace them with leaders who will follow His plans.

Below is a list of the current Supreme Court justices. I encourage you to pray for them – that God would give them wisdom, that they would be led by the Holy Spirit – even if they don’t know it. And if they refuse to follow God’s plan, that the Lord would remove them and put someone in their place that would.

President George W. Bush nominated him as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and he took his seat January 31, 2006.

Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice

President Barack Obama nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on May 26, 2009, and she assumed this role August 8, 2009.

Elena Kagan, Associate Justice

President Obama nominated Elena Kagan as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on May 10, 2010. She took her seat on August 7, 2010.
