You are probably hearing a lot about Kim Davis in the media. If you’re on Facebook or Twitter, you’re hearing something. If you’re following the candidates for President, you’ve probably heard something. You might have heard that what is happening to her is unconstitutional. Maybe that she is stupid or brave, a bigot, a hypocrite, standing for her faith.
I’m sure you’re hearing a lot if you’re paying attention. But one thing you’re probably not hearing is the real reason she is where she is. No, it’s not because she refused to give out some marriage licenses. It’s not because our government is anti-Christian. It’s not because of this leader or that leader. It’s not because of some law passed or not passed, some ruling or some judge.
Yes, all of those things happened, but those are not the reason she is where she is. All of those are simply the effects of the cause. Now, many people will deny the reason, even be offended at the reason. But for those who earnestly desire to hear the truth, the real reason will shock, sadden, and hopefully stir you to make a change.
The real reason that Kim Davis is where she is, simply put, is because the church of the Lord Jesus Christ – you and I, did not pray. The church did not take the authority that Jesus Christ has given to us in His name and pray for our leaders and our nation.
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. – Timothy 2:1-2
It is clear that as Christians, we are told to pray for our leaders. It would be unfair of God to tell us to do something that we could not do – thus, we can have the assurance that our prayers make a difference for our leaders and our nation.
We can see from the scripture above that if we pray for our leaders, we will live a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness. It is clear that we are not living a quiet and peaceable life today in our nation. Thus, we can conclude that the church is not doing what we are commanded to do.
We are told, “Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven (Matthew 16:19 and 18:18).” If we were binding and loosing demon spirits, circumstances, and everything that rises against the Word of God, the things going on in our nation would not be happening to the extent that they are.
Oh, but Brother Krist, the Bible says in the last days…
Yes, and we have been living in the last days ever since Jesus left the earth. Bad things have been happening to Christians ever since Jesus left the earth. But at the same time, we have had the authority of the name of Jesus Christ since then as well. We have had the commandment to pray to see things change.
There are stories – true stories – of entire towns coming under the conviction of the Holy Spirit as evangelist Charles Finney preached the Gospel. Multitudes were saved and turned to Jesus Christ. This didn’t happen just because he preached Christ. No, his preaching was preceded by hours and hours of intense prayer by him and others. We must get back to these extended times in prayer for the church and for our nation.
During the era of the Great Awakening, church attendance more than doubled. Entire towns were accepting Christ as their savior. In founder father Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography, he wrote, “ …it seem’d as if all the world were growing religious, so one could not walk thro’ the town in an evening without hearing psalms sung in different families of every street.” This did not happen because of chance, but because of prayer – men and women of God seeking the power of God for their community and their nation.
As Christians, it seems too many of us have gotten caught up in the world, in the way the world does things. Oh no, I’m not talking about you who are reading this. I’m talking about all those others who aren’t reading this. It’s them. Not you or I.
A large majority of us, seemingly, have gotten taken up with the things of this world – some good and needful things – everyday affairs that must be taken care of; Some things not so needful – some things that just take up our time; Some things that get us looking more at this natural world instead of the spiritual world.
Whatever these things may be though, if we have any desire to see our nation turn back to God, -not controlled by a minority that has overtaken our government, our society and culture – we must turn back to God and His way of doing things. We must turn back to prayer, back to the name of Jesus Christ. We must turn back to the authority given to us – to have our leaders turn back to God or removed from the position entrusted to them. We must turn back to the scriptures and praying for the power of God and the move of God to be poured out on our nation.
If we in the church continue to sit idly by and do nothing, or hold picket signs and share Facebook posts, sign petitions and gripe to someone who can’t do anything for us, then we will continue to see other Christians imprisoned, rights violated, and even killed in their own country. However, if we turn to God and to prayer, taking our authority and praying for our nation and our government – not only will Kim Davis be set free, this nation will be turned around and the church of the Lord Jesus Christ will rise up to take its place as the glorious church that our Lord Jesus Christ is coming back for.
Stay with the Word of God and the Spirit of God.
